December 2019 Marion calls the editors of Oorlogsliefdekind. On this website she has read the story of Conny Latoel, who is looking for her father, the military Harry or Arie Willems or Willemse. Conny Latoel's post immediately reminded her of her father-in-law. It wouldn't be true, would it? Could her father-in-law be Conny's father?
He deceased ten years ago, Marion can't ask him anymore. Marion's mother-in-law is still alive, but they really can't discuss it with her. She's too old, and the subject is far too sensitive to touch.
Marion consults with her husband and her brother-in-law and calls the editors of War Love Child to get in touch with Conny.
Marion's father-in-law, Arie, is an Indonesia-veteran. He served with the December 7 Division and was a driver. They have a picture of him behind the wheel of a jeep, with a laughing Indonesian girl in the back and two companions. And there are more similarities. Arie suffered from kidney stones at the time, so who knows, he might have been in the hospital and met Conny's mother, who worked as a nurse and fell in love with one of her patients.
The editors contact Conny. It's just before the Christmas holidays and Conny is going to spend it with her family and grandchildren. She'll talk to them about what to do. Should she contact Marion? Or doesn't she dare?
She decides to take the plunge.
Sometime in January the families meet. Conny's very nervous. But it turns out very nice. There's a click back and forth. Reason enough to do a DNA test together. The results will be soon. Did Conny finally find her dad? |
