Documentary Tuan Papa (Sir Daddy) (main picture)
Els and Dad
Tuan Papa synopsis:
Dutch soldiers often started loving relationships with Indonesian women in the period 1945-1949 (the colonial war of the Dutch in Indonesia). They fathered an estimated thousands of children. After losing the colonial war and the final independancy of Indonesia, the majority of the military went back home to the Netherlands in 1950.
In this documentary, their 'war love kids' talk about the loss of their unknown fathers and their difficult lives, growing up as mixed blood offspring of the former occupiers in a sometimes hostile Indonesia. The fathers look back on their first experiences with love in the tropics and their motives to withheld the existence of their Indonesian sweethearts and children, once back home. Also some mothers in Java and Bali tell their part of the story.
